Good Rudd for Youngster

On June 16th at Tewitfield fishery Carnforth near Lancaster 11 YEAR OLD James Ansell, who attends West Craven High Technology College in Barnoldswick Lancashire, caught a rudd of 1-8-0 on float fished maggot bait. James was taking part in a combined 2 day operation between Lancashire Constabulary PC Mark Hyde and the British Army colour sergeant Tam Miller.

We were lucky to be offered the water free of charge by owner Les Bratsby who is a great supporter of getting kids into fishing. Dennis O'Connor Ltd a local builder donated all the food for the BBQ. Breakfast and lunch was British Army boil in the bag meals which all the kids thought were excellent. These children age 9 to 15 from several schools in Lancashire all caught lots of roach rudd and perch. To round off the days fishing the boys were entertained by a local folk group.

Apart from colour Sgt Tam Miller the kids were helped out by Sgt Ginger Davies, Gdsm Spencer Gdsm Blackburn and Lance Corporal Taff Thomas, these British Army guys were excellent proving once again the our armed forces are the best in the world. The Lancashire Constabulary were represented by PC Mark Hyde who started the Pendle Buddies Angling Club.

On behalf of all the boys a big thank you goes to Something Fishy for the bait, top 2 prizes were donated by the tackle shop in Kendal, Cumbria. None of this could have happened without the kindness of Les Bratsby owner of the Tewitfield Fishery at Carnforth Tel 01524-730331
Mark Hyde Tam Miller caught some nice rudd on bread flake.

I arrived the previous evening for a midnight start, during the night session I had a pike of 16-10-0 on 2 plastic maggots though if the truth be known a small fish grabbed the plastic bait and was then swallowed by the pike which was hooked in the scissors so it couldn’t bite through the line. I also caught 5 tench between 4 and 5lbs and a common carp about 8lbs on plastic casters.

At dawn I roamed around the lake fishing free lined bread flake on a size 10 hook catching 24 rudd from 1-8-0 to 1-13-0

Two days later I fished the River Ribble which had a foot of extra water, conditions were near perfect. Trotting with bread flake on a size 6 hook to 4lb Gamma line I caught 9 good chub between 3-8-0 and 4-12-0
