Wye & Usk Foundation News 16th September 2005

Two important dates are fast approaching. Firstly, the Foundation’s Annual Meeting will be held at the Three Counties Hotel in Hereford on Friday 14th October at 7pm. It’s a great chance for you to be updated on the progress our projects have made and is open to anyone with an interest in the rivers. The second is the Autumn River Walk on Sunday 27th November when once again, we take a trip around the catchments to show you our river restoration work and hopefully, some spawning salmon.

Both events are open to everyone. Numbers are limited, however, so please contact us as soon as possible if you wish to attend as we are often fully booked well before each event happens. You will find more details, including how to reserve your place, in the attached documents or on our website - http://www.wyeuskfoundation.org/events.htm

The rivers have had a number of small rises in the last two weeks but never really enough to get the salmon moving for either river so salmon fishing remains on hold for the moment except for the downstream beats. The Usk did have a 2ft rise in water levels last weekend and there were plenty of fish around Usk Town. When conditions come right we would strongly urge you to return any Wye fish to protect the spawning stock. For more details on our ‘Catch & Release’ scheme for Wye salmon in 2005 please see the website - http://www.wyeuskfoundation.org/notboard.htm

With the searing July and August months behind us, both rivers’ trout fishing is improving as air and water temperatures start to fall. Remember that 30th September is the last day of the trout season so if you can squeeze one last visit in before that date, we’re waiting to hear from you!

Grayling fishing on the Wye is improving by the day with reports of 2lb+ fish now frequent. A trip to the Wye for the autumn grayling fishing is highly recommended with good availability on the river and with many accommodation providers putting on some excellent deals during the ‘off’ season. The Wye Valley is a special place to be during the autumn months, both from the scenery perspective and through the high quality of the river’s grayling fishing. http://www.wyeuskfoundation.org/grayling.htm

Salmon & sea trout fishing on the Usk continues to 17th October.

The Wye’s salmon season also ends on 17th October, except for all tributaries and the main Wye above Llanwrthwl Bridge, which continue to 25th October.
