In its 260 odd pages there is a wealth of knowledge, the author charts some two centuries of development of development right through to the present day. As one who has spent some considerable amount of time in the northern highlands, not only fishing but bird watching and wildlife photography I have found this delightful book to be well written and so full of information

As I read Salmon Rivers of North Highlands and the Outer Hebrides by Andrew Graham-Stewart published by Hale it certainly bought back many memories from my young and not so young days. I well remember when I stayed with Michael Wiggan and his delightful wife and children at Borrobole in Sutherland when he would regaled me with stories from the highlands. Michael's Grandmother is featured on page 94 having caught her first salmon of 27lbs from the Helmsdale at Salzcraggie pool. Ina Lady Wiggan didn't start salmon fishing until 1934. After that first fish, the great lady averaged some 200-250 salmon a year. Lady Wiggan only stopped fishing at the age of 89. There is a lovely story about this great lady but I will leave that story for you the reader.

Another interesting fact from the book, happened on July 23rd 1743 when one sweep of the net from Thurso's Cruive Pool upstream of the town accounted for a total of 2560 salmon and grilse. The author has certainly done his research and must be complimented on a great book. Andrew Graham-Stewart isn't a Scottish Laird or tweed clad millionaire, in his younger days he was the manager of a rock band doing gigs all over Europe. I can thoroughly recommend Salmon Rivers of North Highlands and the Outer Hebrides by Andrew Graham-Stewart published by Hale at £35-00 It would make an excellent Christmas present.
