Wye & Usk Foundation Preseason Update - 23rd February 2005

To mark the start of the new season the Wye & Usk Foundation are again offering a bottle of champagne, kindly donated by Pol Roger, to the two anglers that land and return the first fresh salmon on both the Wye and the Usk. To claim this prize all you have to do is contact us with the details of your catch, along with photographic evidence and/or witness details – 01982 551 520 or seth@wyeuskfoundation.org We will announce the winners and details of other early fish caught in our update at the end of March. Please remember that the mandatory ‘Catch & Release’ period for salmon is March 3rd to June 15th (inc) for both rivers. Good luck!

The 2005 'Wye & Usk Passport' is being published in the next few days. and will land on your doormats before March 3rd.

Although a number of spates put paid to some of the winter grayling fishing, the two rivers have been spared the continuous high water that we sometimes experience in January and February. The largest spate was on February 9th and mainly affected the Wye as south east Wales was spared much of the rain. Rivers have now dropped back to steady winter flows.

Upper Wye beats have produced some good grayling catches, particularly The Rocks, Llyn Em, Ty-Newydd and Pwll-y-Faedda. With the recent mild weather there have been some very early olive hatches and some fish have been taken on dries. These hatches tend to happen at around midday to 2pm so we advise not starting too early, especially at this time of year! You don’t have to wait until 3rd March, the start of trout and salmon season to go fishing, however. Grayling fishing is available through our booking office and Roving Voucher scheme.

Those getting ready for the salmon season will be wondering how far up each river early salmon will have penetrated. We have received reports of clean fish being seen on the lower Wye in January and later at Hereford. You simply don’t know how far up they will be by 3rd March – it has been a warm but fairly dry winter. Remember, it is catch and release until 16th June and I bet there are a few kelts about too. We have a number of season rods available for various main river beats (a day per week). Please contact us on 01982 551 520 if you would prefer to ensure your fishing throughout the season!

Finally, you can help the Foundation by purchasing your new EA licence from us! Call us, we take credit and debit cards. Tight lines for the forthcoming season from all at the Wye & Usk Foundation.
