Adult Caddisfly Occurrence Scheme - Stuart Crofts
For as long as I can remember I have had an interest in insects, as a boy I would spend
my summer holidays catching butterflies, hunting down grasshoppers and feeding
hapless flies to hungry spiders. When I started fly-fishing a detailed study of the
insects that the fish I was trying to catch actually fed on, was for me, a natural
development. I have since spent many years collecting and studying the mayflies
(Ephemeroptera) and stoneflies (Plecoptera). With the mayfly species I was especially
keen to try and understand the different ways these enigmatic creatures transform
from the nymph stage to the adult dun stage (subimagines). Obviously, knowledge
from this has helped my fly-fishing.
In more recent years my curiosity started to turn to the world of caddisflies
(Trichoptera) but my fly-fishing books had only the briefest of information and I
wanted to know much more. Since 1993 I have had the great fortune to fly-fish with
various fly-fishing teams representing England, as a result I have fly-fished in many
different countries. During my travels and fishing at these events I have met with
anglers from all over the world who also have a keen interest in the entomological
side of the sport. From these meetings it soon became obvious that, with the adult
caddisflies especially, our understanding (the UK fly-fisherman’s that is) was full of
huge gaps.
In the spring of 2006 I had a letter printed in Fly-Fishing & Fly-Tying, a popular and
informative UK based fly-fishing magazine. In this letter I appealed for help from the
readers, I needed them to catch and send me any adult caddisflies they came across
whilst out fishing. My idea was then to identify these specimens and create a database
of where & when our different adult caddisfly species are on the wing, the aim being
to get a better understanding of adult caddisflies and their relationship with the sport
of fly-fishing. This was the birth of the Adult Caddisfly Occurrence Scheme.
Since the scheme started I have had numerous samples sent in and the database has
grown steadily. I have also enrolled other "collectors" (who are not anglers); these
have included my family & friends and members of various local natural history
societies. To be honest anyone who has shown even the slightest interest has been
roped in! This has expanded the areas from which I receive samples to beyond that of
the fly-fishing related sites, as a result, an even greater variety of species are now
starting to come through.
Each year all the data is sent to Dr. Ian Wallace (from The National Trichoptera
Recording Scheme), the National Biodiversity Network, the Freshwater Biological
Association, the Riverfly Partnership, Buglife (The Invertebrate Conservation Trust),
my local natural history society (Sorby), everyone who sends in the samples and
anyone else who just asks!
2012 - Brief Review
2012 proved to be another interesting year, especially with the weather. We started the year deep in drought
and ended the year deep in floods after one of the wettest summers on record.
One of the projects I set myself during 2012 was (as in 2011) to try and locate other sites where Synagapetus
dubitans could be found in North Yorkshire. This was quite successful and I now have several sites with
larvae present. Additionally, at some of these sites I also collected a few adults in the summer of 2012 that add
nicely to the records from 2010 and 2011. The project to find more population sites will continue during 2013.
I also plan to do more research on the sites where the species is currently found in an effort to learn more
about them and their habitat requirements.
In the spring of 2012 I went with Andrew Dixon up to the Loch Tay area of Scotland in another search for the
rare caddisfly; Glossosoma intermedium. This species has not been found in England for several years and
even before this it was only ever found in a few streams in the Lake District. In a similar survey during 2011
we picked the Glennshee area of Scotland because it had a number of streams with similar physical conditions
to the Lake District sites where the species had been found in the past. The reason we selected the Loch Tay
area in 2012 was that there had been some unconfirmed records of Glossosoma intermedium being found at
some sites in the recent past. Unfortunately, despite checking many locations, and just like in 2011, we did not
find any evidence of Glossosoma intermedium being present.
Back with the main Adult Caddisfly Occurrence Scheme the number of sample tubes sent in to be analysed
was, as in previous years, very impressive. This gave me the job of having to check over 1250 individual
caddisflies, each one to be identified and catalogued. The results of these endeavours make up the data in this
report. The scheme recorded 94 species in 2012, interestingly samples were collected in every calendar month
of 2012 and three new species were added to the on-going scheme list (the scheme started up in 2006 and now
has 136 species recorded). The three new species to the scheme list were; Limnephilus stigma, Wormaldia
mediana and Tinodes assimilis.
The full list of all the species recorded during 2012 is on the chart following this review (pages 1 to 15). The
chart lists the caddisflies in alphabetical order. When more than one sample of a particular species has been
found they are themselves listed in “date occurred" order.
As in previous years this data is also available on a CD-ROM. The CD gives the data in more formats and
with photographs of some of the species. These are available for £5.00. Any money raised will go towards the
funding of the 2012 scheme. Just post me a cheque (made payable to Torrentis Products), a stamped SAE and
a note requesting the CD.

simply would not exist.

Adult Caddisfly Occurrence Scheme 2013
• If you are already a collector and want to continue to do so during 2013 you
do not have to do anything other than just read the notes below as a reminder
of how to deal with any samples you get (if you have no tubes left then please
let me know so I can send some more to you).
• If you are not yet involved with the scheme but would like to take part then
please drop me an email (or a letter) so I can send you some collecting tubes
and simple instructions.
• If you no longer want to be part of the scheme then please return any tubes
you have not used with a note and I can remove your details from my
database.
Adult Caddisfly Collecting Notes 2013
If you get any adult caddisflies (but not the larvae) just put them into a tube. As soon
as possible put this into a domestic deep freeze for about 2 minutes. This is considered
a humane way to immobilise an adult caddisfly, but please don’t leave them in too
long as they will drop to bits! Next, fill the tube with either neat vodka (or similar
clear spirit such as gin), or a 50/50 mix of isopropyl alcohol and water. Any of these
will preserve the caddisflies until they can be identified. However, please do not use
neat isopropyl alcohol, meths or surgical spirit in any form, all will desiccate a
caddisfly making it very difficult to work with while trying to confirm its identity.
Write on a small slip of paper (see “Helpful Tips” below) in pencil, where (the
approximate location) and when (the time & date) you caught the sample along with
your name. Put this in the tube with the caddisfly samples (alcohol will have no effect
on either the paper or writing in pencil). Please do not stick a label on the tube as
these, often, just fall off.
Drop the tube back in the post to me with your name and address along with any other
notes of interest on the capture. I can then post back another empty tube in return.
You can put the tube in any type of envelope, they do not need to be padded, these
tubes are very strong and will not leak. You will need to put, at the very least, a “large
letter” stamp on the envelope due to its thickness with a sample tube enclosed.
However, if in doubt get the package checked at the Post Office before sending.
I do not get much chance to analyse samples until the long winter evenings, hence the
reason to preserve them in alcohol.
You can expect many different types of adult caddisfly to be on the wing from March
to the end of November. They range in size from 3mm to nearly 30mm and we have
almost 200 very varied species, most are found near water but they can turn up
anywhere, some are very common and others incredibly rare. So, even if you only
think you have one please send it along for me to check. Plus, do not worry if you
think you have caught the same type twice, again please send it along as this
information is useful for the "flight period data".
At the year-end and after all the samples have been identified I will put together an
annual review. A copy of the review and data will then be sent to you, from this you
will be able to see the species you caught and sent in.
Helpful Hints & Tips

You can put several caddis samples in one tube as long as they are from the same
venue. Please do not forget to use pencil on the slip (ink dissolves in alcohol!)
National Grid Reference (NGR)
It is preferable to send along a six figure National Grid Reference (NGR) along with
the approximate sample location name.
To check you have worked out more-or-less the correct locations of a sample you are
sending there are now good websites available. Here one that I find very useful to
check locations online:

This is a fantastic site with a split screen showing a map and satellite view side by
side so you really can see where you are, this is a free website but you can donate to
help keep it running.
