Over the past few months I have been across to the United States on several occasions. The last time was in May when I visited the Thomas and Thomas factory in Massachusetts and fished in the Catskills - see our article on the news page.
Since returning from the Catskills which is considered as the place where dry fly fishing first started in America. I have done some research on the subject, In 1895 fifteen well known anglers who were bankers and brewers formed The Flyfishers Club of Brooklyn. In 1897 The Brooklyn Flyfishers after a poor season of brook trout fishing, then moved north from the Brodhead's into the Catskills and a log cabin at Hardenburgh farm on the Little Beaverkill. When they arrived they found Theodore Gordon in residence. From reading books of the period it seems as if the Brooklyn Fly fishers might have moved prematurely as the following season was a good one on the Brodhead water shed.
